CXXXVIII: A Christmas Movie Competition
Upon learning that my Aunt shares the same love and borderline obsession with the Holidays that I do, we made a date to sit down and watch nothing but Christmas movies! Even though that day didn’t go exactly as planned, we did add a bunch of Christmas movies to our “Must Watch Queue”.
Here are some of the movies that I’ve gotten into this Holiday season:
THE CHRISTMAS DOCTOR (HALLMARK)
This is a Hallmark movie starring Holly Robinson-Peete who plays a doctor who happens upon a small town and people from her past that bring up a painful holiday memory.
Holly Robinson-Peete plays a former military doctor who struggles after leaving the life of official service to join the life of being a service to her new community. Her job brings her to a small town that welcomes her with open arms and instills a joy for all things festive… And, in true Hallmark fashion, it wouldn’t be a story without her also falling in love.
Although I found this movie to be completely corny, I did enjoy it for all of it’s holiday cheer! The corniness always temporarily turns me away but the holiday festivities bring me right back!
THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES (NETFLIX)
This Netflix gem was amazing and surprisingly funny. What an adventure this movie takes you on!
So much was fit into a two-hour window that definitely makes you feel like you’ve gotten your money’s worth. And, I can’t lie, it was entertaining and difficult for me to peel my eyes away from.
Kurt Russell played the perfect version of Santa Claus in this film and even added a fun little musical component. If I were you, I wouldn’t miss the chance to check this movie out. It was quite a joy to behold.
JINGLE JANGLE (NETFLIX)
I’m going to start this off by saying that I am completely bias about this movie for three big reasons:
It’s a musical
It stars Phylicia Rashad
It’s unapologetically Black!
I watched this movie the day that it was made available on Netflix and got complete Greatest Showman vibes from everything from the choreography to the wardrobe to the dancing in the streets! This was made even better because I can tell from the way that the songs were written, to how well they were sung, and down to all of the movements and mannerisms that a team of very talented Black people had a lot to do with this film.
I won’t give away the plot or any story lines because I honestly think that you should check this one out yourself too, but, I will say that this was a complete treat!
MERRY LIDDLE CHRISTMAS (LIFETIME)
Now, I am generally not a fan of Lifetime movies because they all star the same boring, non-acting actors and the story lines are basically the same. But, I watched this movie at the request of my aunt and I was pleasantly surprised.
This movie stars Kelly Rowland who successful at her job and awaiting an important opportunity. Unbeknownst to her, that opportunity is becoming available at the same time that her family is dropping by her tidy place to spread their Christmas joys!
We watch as Rowland’s uptight character learns to navigate family, success, the holidays, addressing her compulsive and controlling ways, and in true holiday movie fashion, we get love.

This movie was excellent comedic relief!

The Mistletoe Inn
I was drawn to this movie because it was a good tale about a writer! As an aspiring writer myself, I loved seeing young authors go through writing workshops and vying for the attention of one of their favorite authors.
It was surely a lovely tale that combined the Holidays with a couple of other things that I love.
