CXXXVI: Sienna Naturals (Product Review)

The trend seems to be for me to start out my product reviews with the cons, so, in true Bree fashion that’s what I’ll do!

ONE BIG CON:

The shipping and communication (package deal of horror)!

I ordered this product on OCTOBER 29, 2020.

I want that to sink in because it’s important. I ordered this product, did not receive it in PR, and this is not a sponsored post. I saw this product promoted by Issa Rae as her “go-to” products and like many others (I’m sure), I was intrigued. So, I went to the website and purchased the whole curated box.

This box retails for $75 and includes 4 products (they even threw in two satin scrunchies). The tax, state included, came to $6.57 and the shipping was $9.95. My order total was $91.52. Fine! Right?

Wrong. For a month, I heard nothing regarding my purchase. When I communicated with the brand about the whereabouts or even a status update on the production or processing of orders I received generic responses like:

“We’re excited to get the products to you…”

“We can’t wait for you to try these products out.”

“We’re looking forward to getting these products to you.”

But, NEVER did I receive actual information regarding when and where my product was! Finally on NOVEMBER 30, 2020 I received word that my product had “updated shipping information”. This must’ve simply meant that it finally made its way to a transport facility and a label was created. I finally received the products on DECEMBER 7, 2020. This ended up being a month and 7 days worth of a wait with terrible communication in-between.

At this point, I think it’s important to take you back to the fact that I paid for this month long shipping! This was probably one of my worst experiences with shipping on a product and I had to check multiple times just to make sure that they hadn’t forgotten my order. I did the bulk of the legwork when it came to follow-up and communication and that is not how things should go when you’re running a business.

ENOUGH OF THAT, LET’S GET TO THE PROS:

What’s In The Box?

  1. Plant Power Protein and Moisture Repair Mask, 10 Fl Oz.

  2. H.A.P.I. Shampoo, 10 Fl Oz.

  3. Dew Magic Leave-In Conditioning Creme, 10 Fl Oz.

  4. Daily Elixir Moisturizing Hair and Scalp Oil, 3 Fl Oz.

Packaging:

The packaging is, in my opinion, spot-on for the brand and the ingredients. They are different shades of greens and a bit of brown which a reminiscent of the earth.

Sienna Naturals is clean care for textured hair.

Plant Power Protein & Moisture Repair

This is a treatment mask with an unforgettably fresh smell. Now, I could get into the ingredients, but I believe that you are all capable of looking those up on your own, so:

Let’s talk about how this product feels! I used this product after cleansing my hair with the H.A.P.I. Shampoo and was pleasantly surprised. This product allowed for snag-free detangling and easy manipulation.

I left it on for about 10 minutes before rinsing it out and noticed that my curls were nicely clumped and defined (apart from the curls around my crown). Next time, however, I will apply a bit more around my crown area and really work it in to see if I can get the crown of my head to be as defined as the rest of my hair.

H.A.P.I Shampoo

This shampoo felt shockingly good on my hair. It didn’t create tangles and snags, and it didn’t seem to strip my hair.

There are problem areas in my hair that the shampoo seemed to struggle against, but I fixed that by being sure to add extra leave-in conditioner to ensure that I replenished my hair's moisture.

Overall, I wouldn’t mind using this product regularly. It smells absolutely amazing and fresh. The smell genuinely reminds me of being outdoors and adds to the overall experience.

Dew Magic Leave-In Conditioner

I was super skeptical about this product once I opened the product and pumped some out. This product is oddly thin and a bit runny.

As a Type 4 natural, I am sure to only purchase conditioner, leave-ins and stylers that are super thick. Many Type 4 naturals struggle with getting and keeping the moisture within their hair, so the thicker the product, the more promising it is for keeping our hair moisturized throughout the week.

Overall, this wouldn’t be a product that I would reach for alone. If I pair this with a comparable, thicker product, then I think that this will work just fine, however.

Lock & Seal

There are some oils that simply sit on top of your hair and others that seem to melt into it.

I think that it’s important for many naturals to discover the oils that your hair likes the most because those are the oils that your hair will most likely soak up! They’ll be the most beneficial to your hair’s moisture retention.

My hair loves Aragon oil and avocado oil. Those oils seem to just absorb into my hair, but every once in a while, I try different oil blends.

With this Lock & Seal oil, I noticed that it seemed to absorb well when paired with water and the Dew Magic Leave-In Conditioner. However, when I applied it again two days later to take out my wash day braids, it just seemed to sit on top of my hair.

Overall, I was not overly impressed with this oil, nor did I find a problem with it. I wouldn’t mind finishing out this product and paired with other products, this may even get it’s chance to shine.

Overall, these products left my hair feeling good, but I will say that other products have made my hair feel way more moisturized!

Where I think that these products went wrong was with the Leave-In Conditioner! I think that this product will definitely work for less textured hair types, but even when building and building, with Type 4 hair, it just doesn’t seem to provide the amount of moisture that I needed.

Granted, these are just products from the curated box! So, Sienna Naturals may have thicker products that can feed that need, but those simply weren’t included in this box.

If I were to rate these products on a scale from 1-10, then I’d rate them as follows:

  1. Plant Power Protein & Moisture Repair Mask: 8.5/10

  2. H.A.P.I. Shampoo: 9/10

  3. Dew Magic Leave-In Conditioner: 5/10

  4. Lock & Seal Daily Elixir Moisturizing Hair & Scalp Oil: 6.5/10
