Word of the Week: Commence

Commence means “to begin”

Welcome to the Word of the Week Series!

Starting this thing off is the word “Commence”. I decided to start with this word because, with the idea of something different comes the challenge of starting it. Anytime that I try to implement something new or different on my blog, no matter how small or big, I worry about getting it started. I also think about whether it’s something that will be well-received, or whether it’s something that I’ll be able to keep up with given my schedule. Or I think about the always-present thought of whether I should still be blogging anyway — another medium that’s become so diluted with click-bait and misinformation.

Either way, the struggle to begin becomes quite real!

A fun thing about the word “commence”

Doesn’t it make your mind go straight to G R A D U A T I O N day?!

Although “commencement” comes from the Latin roots, “com” and “mensa” meaning to “sit at a common table” and although it signifies the student’s new ability to sit, as peers or equals, with their teachers, “commencement” just makes me think that it’s the diploma or degree that allows you to start a life beyond where you were.

With any new and great thing comes the challenge of getting started. I’ve even started a couple of fun endeavors of my own and, for the most part, excitement propels me into starting but worry works hard to keep me from being consistent with it. With that in mind, I usually have to begin and begin again until it becomes like second nature! Yes, sometimes starting something means a constant start and restart! But, the goal here, and for all of 2023 and beyond is to commence…

Best!
