In Industry 001: Glossary

To be in a world, not only do I like a history lesson on it, but I also like a glossary! For this, each In Industry Glossary post will include ten words and their definitions starting with today’s!

Act

An act is easiest described as different scenes that make up your story.

scene

A scene is a part of a film, book or series that happens at a specific time and place. Scenes and scene definitions differ when considering filmmaking versus theater definitions.

director

A director oversees creative lead of a film. Directors uphold the creative vision throughout the whole film. Directors are generally employed by executive producers or producers who are in charge of a production.

producer

A producer is a person who oversees film production/development. They are either hired by a company or may work independently.

screenwriter

A screenwriter is someone who writes content for a visual medium - films, television, documentaries, etc. A screenwriter creates dynamic characters

ensemble cast

An ensemble case is one that is composed of multiple principal actors and performers and are typically assigned roughly equal amounts of screen-time. Examples of ensemble casts include: Avenger Infinity War and Avengers Age of Ultron (to name a few).

Exposition

Exposition is the insertion of background information within a story or a narrative (setting, characters, backstory, etc.)

production

The stage of the filmmaking process where the story described in the script is actualized with the filming of each scene.

post-production

The term post-production refers to the part of the process that begins after principal photography with the assembling and editing of footage. Editors work on video and audio material to cue and put it in order by/according to a shot list and the director’s vision.
